Rev. Reed Lee Pedersen's
I could not resist the urge to use the photo for this rambling! The last weekend in August my wife and I had a lot of driving, not a lot of sleeping, good barbecue on two occasions, and a chance to witness and participate in two miracles. In the evening August 25th I became godfather to a lovely boy, Jordan Ray Reising. My wife and I were honored to be Jordan's sponsors as we witnessed his baptism at Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Asbury, IA. He is my first godchild, something I was never certain I would get the honor of being. On the morning of August 26th I not only became godfather to a lovely little girl, Charlotte Frances Barton, but I had the honor of presiding over her baptism as well. My wife and I were two of the sponsors and all of us there at St. James Lutheran Church in Allison, IA witnessed to miracle #2 of that weekend. If you haven't figured it out, the two miracles were the baptisms themselves. In this Sacrament of Holy Baptism God claimed both Jordan and Charlotte as children of God, inheritors of God's kingdom. Something so simple as dripping three drops (or handfuls) of water does such a powerful thing. As a godparent (also known as baptismal sponsors in the ELCA hymnal) I am blessed with not just witnessing to this miracle, but also blessed with the responsibility to help mature and guide the faith lives of these two cutie patooties. To Jamie and Scott (Jordan's parents) and to Alex and Kyle (Charlotte's parents) I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart and I look forward to seeing the people your two children of God become.
